Make an Evergreen Wreath with the Family This Thanksgiving

Make an Evergreen Wreath with the Family This Thanksgiving

When Thanksgiving rolls around, most of us start thinking about turkey dinners, board games, or maybe a little Black Friday shopping. But what if this year you added a new tradition—one that brings everyone together, connects you to nature, offers a few laughs, and kicks off the holiday season in the most creative way possible?

Try making an evergreen wreath as a family.
There’s something magical about stepping outdoors on a crisp Vermont afternoon, gathering fresh greens, and turning them into something beautiful you’ll enjoy all season long. It’s simple, it’s hands-on, and it turns ordinary family time into a shared memory.

Step 1: Take a Walk and Gather Nature’s Treasures
If you live near woods, fields, or even a few evergreens in the yard, bundle up and head outside together. Look for:

  • Spruce, pine, or fir branches
  • Birch twigs with their lovely golden-white bark
  • Berries, pinecones, seed pods, and bits of moss
  • Twigs or vines to twist into a base

When trimming from trees, remember never overcut or damage the tree. Clip small sections evenly, leaving plenty behind. The goal is to gather mindfully and appreciate the beauty that’s already around you.

Even a short walk becomes an adventure when you look for color and texture — glossy greens, silver bark, deep reds, and natural golds hiding among the leaves.

Step 2: Build the Base
You can purchase a wire or grapevine wreath form or make one yourself by bending a flexible vine into a circle. Layer your greens around the frame, all facing the same direction, and secure each bundle with florist wire or twine.

Don’t worry about perfection — a few stray sprigs make it feel natural and wild. Let each family member take a section so everyone leaves their touch on the finished wreath.

Step 3: Add Natural Accents
Once your base is full and lush, start decorating! Add the birch twigs, clusters of berries, dried leaves, or pinecones you gathered on your walk. Mix textures and shades to give the wreath dimension and charm.

If you’d like a bit of shimmer, a light dusting of gold spray on a few leaves or pinecones adds a festive touch without losing that handmade warmth. Choose a ribbon for the Thanksgiving holiday and change it out for the Holidays.

Step 4: Learn the Basics of Bow Making
A good bow brings it all together. Choose a ribbon that complements your greens — deep red, burlap, plaid, or gold are classic favorites.

Here’s the simple way:

  1. Make two large loops like “bunny ears.”
  2. Cross them, pull one through the middle, and tighten.
  3. Fluff and adjust the loops until it looks balanced.
  4. Wrap wire around the center and attach it to the wreath.

If you’re using wider ribbon, try three or four loops for a fuller bow. Don’t be afraid to play with texture — velvet, linen, and metallic ribbons all look wonderful against the natural greenery. Here is a link if you are more of a visual learner.

Step 5: Enjoy the Process
Turn on some holiday music, make hot cocoa, and let everyone get a little messy. You’ll find that the conversation flows easily when hands are busy.

Once the wreaths are finished, hang them proudly on the front door or in a window. Every time you walk past, you’ll be reminded of the laughter, teamwork, and simple joy that went into making it.
