Spotlight on Joanne Conant: An Inspiring Artist

As a fellow artist and maker, I've always admired those who inspire creativity and innovation. One artist who has greatly influenced my own creative journey is Joanne Conant, a talented artist from Newtown, Connecticut.

Joanne produces stunning enameled objects, paintings, and wire-wrapped jewelry. She also shares her expertise by teaching in her home studio and at various art centers. Known for her mastery of enameling techniques such as Cloisonné, Plique-a-jour, Champleve, Grisaille, Limoges and Fauré, she creates exquisite metal pieces like boxes, pendants, brooches, and plaques.

Joanne's artistic foundation includes a Commercial Arts Degree from the Minneapolis Technical Institute and a 21-year apprenticeship with renowned enamellist Margaret Seeler. Her talents extend beyond enameling. Her oil paintings, which she studied under master painter Ira Barkoff, are equally captivating.

Joanne has been a dedicated educator for more than 30 years, teaching at institutions like the Tucson Museum of Art School, Connecticut State College, and the Brookfield Craft Center, where she was the enameling studio manager for nine years. She also offers private lessons and workshops in her Newtown studio. I was fortunate to learn basic soldering techniques from Joanne, and I'll always remember her clear, patient instruction.

One of my favorite memories of Joanne is meeting her at a fundraiser for Anne’s Place, where I purchased a beautiful 14K gold wire-wrapped necklace with Peridot beads. Her craftsmanship and artistic vision are truly inspiring.

Joanne has received numerous national and international awards for her enamel work and oil paintings. In fact, the Tucson Museum of Art holds one of her enameled boxes in their permanent collection testament to her extraordinary talent.
